Cocktails and Culture on a Sunday Afternoon

San Diego's been gifted with a bout of unseasonably warm weather this month. With that in mind and with the Chargers (yes I am still a fan. I'm not one of these San Diegans who reflexively resent Los Angeles. My alma mater is located up there) off, my sister and I ventured out for an afternoon with the San Diego Symphony.

What an afternoon it was. "Bach, Bloch and Don Quixote" was the title of the program and it featured renowned cellist Alisa Weilerstein as the main soloist, accompanied by the San Diego Symphony led by Rafael Payare, the organization's new music director and Ms. Weilerstein's husband.

Ms. Weilerstein is a capable and expressive performer. Her interpretation of Richard Strauss' Don Quixote definitely was well-received by the Jacobs Music Center audience and she, Mr. Payare and the orchestra got an enthusiastic ovation after the performance ended.

The Jacobs Center's acoustics are superb for concert listening. It was only my second time attending
an event there and I am definitely sold on the experience.

Following the performance, my sister and I went to the Westgate Plaza Hotel, a truly old-school San Diego experience. The Westgate's been open since 1970 and has been a staple of my family's outings, including a dinner celebration for completing my undergraduate journalism degree.

We had cocktails at the Plaza Bar, which truly is reflective of the time it opened, featuring French decor like crystal chandeliers. That was followed by dinner, which I will share in another blog post.

Ta-ta, dear readers.
